HD McKay owner, Damien McKay is to take on the challenge of cycling over 553km along Donegal’s Wild Atlantic Way coastline in an Ultra Cycle Race which takes place in June this year. The race must be completed within 40 hours.
“I have been cycling for several years now and generally choose an event each year to keep me focused and motivated, giving me something to work to,” says Damien, a busy consulting engineer. “Being a business owner, I find getting out on the road at evenings and weekends helps me deal with the day to day pressures and challenges. It’s great for keeping focused.”
The Donegal Atlantic Way Ultra Race is an ultra-cycling event along the rugged and beautiful Donegal coastline. On Friday 23rd June 2017, cyclists from all over Ireland, the UK and Europe will line up in Letterkenny, to begin the race, which is one of the island’s ultimate endurance challenges. The route takes you past Malin head, Mamore Gap, Knockalla, Atlantic Drive, Horn Head, Carrickfin, Glengesh Pass, Sliabh League and Barnesmore Gap – all within 40 hours.
“The biggest cycling challenge I have been involved in up to now was a 4-day 400-mile cycle from Mizen Head to Malin Head a few years back,” says Damien. “I have also taken part in several adventure races such as the Coastal Cancer Challenge, Extreme North Events & 10k runs since then.”
Getting ready for the Ultra Cycle challenge:
“I take a holistic approach in preparing for a race – preparation is not just about putting up miles on the bike. So for me, it’s extremely important to include nutrition, strength and conditioning, and to have the right crew there for support.”
“Being my first event of this magnitude my primary goal is to really enjoy the event and finish in a reasonable time……hopefully with hours to spare! Plus, it gives me the opportunity to spend a couple of days on the bike without feeling guilty – fellow cyclists will know what I mean – around the most beautiful scenery this County offers.”
